Life cycle: Common chickweed is a winter annual that has smooth stems and leaves; can have several generations a year during cool wet seasons and forms prostrate dense patches in turf, landscape and vegetable gardens.
Conditions that favor growth: thin, weak lawn, prefers poorly drained sites but common in a wide range of soils and conditions

Cultural control: Maintain healthy, dense turf that can compete and prevent weed establishment. Even established chickweed is easily removed with hand pulling. To keep turf strong, fertilize cool-season grasses in the fall rather than spring when it favors the weedy, summer annuals. Mow high to keep grass growing strong. Never scalp or take off more than 1/3 of the height at a time. Water deeply as opposed to frequent, light sprinkling, which encourages weed-seed germination.
