When the grass has strong, deep roots the grass can with stand more stress, heat, pressure, dry spells & some drought if watering is maintained.

It is important to remember that what we do to the soil now could affect our entire plant, shrub or tree growing season. The soils health really does matter!

Thatch

I see thatch build up on most lawns that I evaluate through the course of each year.

Thatch is not a problem if the thatch is under a 1/2". If thatch is over a 1/2" then there is a serious problem because the grass roots cannot get down through the thick layer of thatch to the soil the grass needs.

Improper mowing can lead to a thatch buildup. Improper leaf mulching is a surefire way to have thatch buildup.

Did you know it does your grass no good to thatch oak leaves into the soil?

The oak leaves are acidic and the soil needs a pH level at 6.5-7.0 for the lawn to grow great grass!

You will receive good healthy root growth if you remove the thatch and the leaves when there are to many leaves. Some experts say a little bit of leaves debris will be OK.

Lawn Aeration

Lawn AERATION is one thing that helps every lawn.

When soil compaction is reduced the moisture will be able to soak into the ground instead of running off.

Aeration allows the roots to grow into soil that is not hard and having to push through hard, compacted soil. This allows a channel for the roots to grow down deeper and for the roots to receive moisture faster in the aeration holes. The grass will start to fill in the voids when aeration is done each season.

Over Seeding

Over seeding is HIGHLY recommended to help fill in the thin, weak areas of the lawn.

Grass is always dying out due to stress, age and other environmental  factors!

Over seeding will help repair those areas with proper watering after aeration is completed will help fix the lawn. We want to get good seed to soil contact and this will help the seed when the seed starts germinating.

You do not want to over seed a lawn on top of thatch or on top of compacted soil. You are asking for failure

Just throwing grass seed will not get you the desired results.

TURF MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (TMP)

A soil test the first step.

The soil test will tell us if the soil is lacking anything and what steps are needed to correct the soil nutrients.

A 6 step Turf Management Program from Grosh's Lawn Service is the way to a GREEN, HEALTHY LAWN!

Mowing

With proper mowing the desired results can be achieved.

With improper mowing all the hard work and investment will be lost because the lawn was mowed to short and stressed the lawn, more than 1/3 of the leaf blade was cut off at one-time, piles of grass clippings was left laying on top of the grass thus not allowing the grass to receive the proper amount of sunlight and air.

Scalping the lawn so you do not have to mow as often is not helping the lawn at all. The taller the grass (3-4") to more the grass blades protect the soil  because the blades of grass shades the soil making it harder for weeds to germinate and allowing the soil to conserve moisture.

Watering

Watering of the lawn in times of stress from drought may be required to keep a green, healthy lawn

Watering should be done in the morning and on an infrequent basis and the lawn will need 1" of moisture a week. Watering of ten minutes each day will not help due to evaporation of the little bit of moisture that was watered. A deep watering will be needed to supply the grass roots with a reliable water source. The deeper the water goes into the soil the deeper the grass will grow trying to use the moisture in the soil with a good aeration job.

An irrigation system is less stress full and allows for proper watering each time and infrequent times.

Even with an irrigation system you do not want to water each and every day at the same time.

Dragging the sprinklers around the lawn to different areas will be needed to keep the lawn green and uniform during times of dry weather of drought.
