We mulched a new customers landscape beds today and we found this! The homeowner was string trimming the bark off the holly. There was no mulch ring around the holly to protect it from the mower or string trimmer. When the grass grew into the holly the customer would use the string trimmer instead of pulling the grass away by hand. Why purchase and plant a tree or shrub if you do not care enough to protect it? The dirt and sod have been placed up against the trunk of the tree (Volcano Mulching)  The soil is at least 2' high on this tree trunk. There were other trees in the lawn that had the same thing done to them. Now is the time to get everything ready for the pool opening. All dead plants should be removed, all grasses should have been cut off after first frost to keep them out of the pool cover and other plants.
