Leyland Cypress Hagerstown MD Washington County MD with Grosh's Lawn Service
You will want to stop and think before you plant your Leyland Cypress in Hagerstown MD & Williamsport MD!
Have you chosen the right site? Remember "Right Place/Right Plant"
The Leyland Cypress can grow up to 4' a year in Washington County MD under the right conditions!
Are there overhead electric wires that will require the Leyland Cypress to to trimmed and topped by the power companies right-away tree trimmers in Clear Spring MD?
Are you away from the property line in Williamsport MD? Why you ask? So that the limbs of the Leyland Cypress do not grow over into your neighbor's property (if you neighbor does not care for the Leyland Cypress, they will cut off ALL the limbs hanging over onto their property). This will not make the Leyland Cypress very appealing to the eye with one side cut off.
Have you considered the mature height and width of the Leyland Cypress?

Did you know that the north side of the Leyland Cypress when they mature will block the sunlight and the grass will start to die off and you (or your neighbor) will be left with bare ground?
The Leyland Cypress pictured below has "Winter Burn" and our area is at the far northern end of the Leylands hardness zone according to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Hardiness Zone.

The Leyland Cypress can grow to a 50' height!
Sometimes the Leyland Cypress grows so fast that the high winds will blow the Leylands over, requiring some kind of rigging to help get them back to their desired location.

Here the property owner chose a metal fence post and rope to help.

This Leyland Cypress is rigged back with rope but still has a very bad lean to it. If heavy snowfall lays on the Leyland or high winds blow, there is a strong possibility that this Leyland will topple over as it grows.

The Leyland Cypress pictured above has died from "Winter Burn" and will not recover. If you are going to replace the dead Leyland with another Leyland time is of the essence so that all of Leylands can grow "UP" together.
If you decide NOT to replace the Leyland, the dead one still should be removed to allow each Leyland on either side of the dead one to fill in the area vacated by the dead Leyland with their branches.
It is also not very appealing to the eye to see a "BIG BROWN SPOT" in a row of green.

If your Leyland Cypress has OVER 50% of winter burn and looks like the Leyland pictured above, the Leyland will not fully recover and should be replaced.

Some consideration should be given to weed control as well and not allow weeds to grow up into/around the Leyland Cypress.
That is why it is recommended that you plant the Leyland Cypress "OFF THE PROPERTY LINE" so that the side facing away from your property on the Leyland can be maintained by the property owner.

It will be very difficult to mow/string trim down along this side of the Leylands pictured above due to the fence post and rope (used for rigging) making access next to impossible. This would be very time consuming to maintain with all of the obstructions.
So remember that in some years the Leyland Cypress will not be affected by WINTER BURN but there is the chance that the Leyland Cypress will be affected by Winter Burn!
