Lawn Aeration
What is Aeration and why do you need it?
Aeration, which is achieved by using a gas-powered machine, helps to relieve compaction in the soil and break down thatch that has built up in the lawn. Thatch in a lawn is like a thatch roof on a house: it repels water, fertilizer, and the grass seed from over seeding, preventing them from reaching the soil where they can do the most good. This causes rainwater to run off of your lawn instead of watering it, and makes your lawn treatments less effective.Breaking down this barrier means you get more benefit from rain and lawn treatments, which improves the health and beauty of your grass.
Here's a list of the things aeration does for you:
- Improves the appearance and health of your lawn.
- Relieves soil compaction and reduces run off of rain water and fertilizer.
- Helps to break down thatch.
- Stimulates the roots of the grass to grow deeper, which helps the grass to stay healthier during dry spells.
- Allows the lawn to recover faster after a dry spell or summer stress.
- Allows the grass to receive the most benefit from our lawn treatments.
- Removes thousands of small plugs from the soil, allowing it to absorb rain and lawn treatments.
Aeration should be done each fall, so that your lawn will receive the maximum benefits from your investment. When we aerate your lawn, we will also remove the plugs of soil that will remain on the turf. Any plugs that we miss will start to break down over the next two (2) weeks due to rainfall and mowing.
Benefits of Aeration & Overseeding Together:
After aeration is completed, we recommend that the entire lawn be over seeded to help repair areas where the grass has died out due to age, stress, neglect, disease or drought, and to thicken up the entire lawn. Thickening the lawn makes it more enjoyable to walk on, and it helps to keep weed seeds from germinating.
Over seeding requires a commitment of a couple of years to achieve the desired results. We recommend that you use Turf Type Tall Fescue grass seed, as it's drought tolerant and disease resistant, and we've seen that it's the best variety of grass seed for the extreme weather conditions in our area.
