Lawn Aeration

What is Aeration and why do you need it?

Aeration, which is achieved by using a gas-powered machine, helps to relieve compaction in the soil and break down thatch that has built up in the lawn. Thatch in a lawn is like a thatch roof on a house: it repels water, fertilizer, and the grass seed from over seeding, preventing them from reaching the soil where they can do the most good. This causes rainwater to run off of your lawn instead of watering it, and makes your lawn treatments less effective.

Breaking down this barrier means you get more benefit from rain and lawn treatments, which improves the health and beauty of your grass.

Here’s a list of the things aeration does for you:

  1. Improves the appearance and health of your lawn.
  2. Relieves soil compaction and reduces run off of rain water and fertilizer.
  3. Helps to break down thatch.
  4. Stimulates the roots of the grass to grow deeper, which helps the grass to stay healthier during dry spells.
  5. Allows the lawn to recover faster after a dry spell or summer stress.
  6. Allows the grass to receive the most benefit from our lawn treatments.
  7. Removes thousands of small plugs from the soil, allowing it to absorb rain and lawn treatments.

Aeration should be done each fall, so that your lawn will receive the maximum benefits from your investment. When we aerate your lawn, we will also remove the plugs of soil that will remain on the turf. Any plugs that we miss will start to break down over the next two (2) weeks due to rainfall and mowing.
